PIR or Presence Detector?
Why the Diamond LED Osprey 4 Recessed Presence Sensor Is the Right Specification for Offices and Meeting Rooms
Specifying the wrong sensor type is one of those installation decisions that generates a client complaint within the first week of occupation. The Diamond LED Osprey 4 recessed presence sensor is built to prevent exactly that. This article covers the difference between PIR and presence detection, the full Osprey 4 specification, and where it fits alongside the Diamond LED Rounded Trinity I Pro for a complete commercial lighting solution.

PIR VS PRESENCE DETECTION – THE PRACTICAL DIFFERENCE
A PIR sensor responds to movement. When movement stops, the timer starts. For corridors, stairwells, and spaces where people are constantly moving through, that is a perfectly appropriate specification.
For offices, meeting rooms, and any space where occupants are stationary for extended periods, it is the wrong call. A person sitting still on a call, reading, or working at a desk generates little enough movement to trigger a PIR timeout. The lights go off. The client calls.
Presence detectors use radar technology to detect micro-movements that a PIR cannot register — including the slight movement of breathing. As long as the space is occupied, the lights stay on. The distinction is straightforward, and getting it right at the specification stage costs nothing. Getting it wrong costs a return visit.
OSPREY 4 – FULL SPECIFICATION
The Diamond LED Osprey 4 uses 24GHz continuous wave radar on the ISM band. It provides 360-degree detection across a 3m radius, installed into a 61.5mm ceiling cut-out at a height of between two and four metres.
Time delay is adjustable from ten seconds to twelve minutes, covering everything from a quick-turnover storage area to a long-format meeting room. Lux sensitivity adjusts from less than three to 2,000 lux — the sensor only activates when ambient light levels require it, so it will not switch on in a space that already has sufficient daylight.
Full specification:
- Detection angle: 360°, 3m radius
- Install height: 2–4m
- Time delay: 10 seconds to 12 minutes, adjustable
- Adjustable ambient lux: less than three to 2,000 lux
- Rated load at 240V: 1,200W
- Input voltage: 110–240V

PAIRING WITH THE DIAMOND LED ROUNDED TRINITY I PRO
For contractors specifying a complete commercial or industrial lighting solution, the Osprey 4 pairs directly with the Diamond LED Rounded Trinity I Pro LED Modular Batten. The batten provides selectable wattage and colour temperature across 4ft, 5ft, and 6ft sizes, covering output requirements across different zones. The Osprey 4 provides the control layer — keeping lights on while the space is occupied and timing out cleanly when it is not. Both products are from Diamond LED Lighting, a wholesale-exclusive supplier with over 25 years of LED product development. Both are available at G2.
